Judging the damage
Since windows are glass they are likely to get damaged, especially if you’ve got children playing! The good news is they don’t always have to be replaced. Most of the time we are able to installation windows. This depends on how much damage has been done.

Before making any decisions, it’s important to assess the damage. To help, we have prepared a list of things you should do to assess the condition.
Number of panes
If your window has a single pane then it is best to have it replaced, even if there is no damage.
Double or triple pane windows are more efficient and reduce your heat loss by half – saving those monthly bills!
If your single pane window is showing its age the why not get it replaced?
The window glass
If the glass is damaged or is moisture has worked its way in, then the first thing you should do is call your window manufacturer! They might have replacement panes reserved for you!
The material
If your windows are vinyl then they probably will last for a long, long time. Usually around 20 years!
Air leaks
Check to see if your windows are letting air leak in around them. The best way to do this is with a small flame like a match or candle. If the candle stays lit and doesn’t flicker badly then you probably don’t need to have them replaced! But, if there is a bit of flickering then a simple repair with some new stripping and caulk will make a big difference.
Hardware
Do your windows open and close smoothly? If not then there may be some faulty parts that can easily be replaced. However, if there is heavy damage to lots of parts then the whole frame or sash might need replacing. In that case, it’s best to replace the whole thing.
Condensation
If there is excess condensation on the inside of your window then there may be damage. If the condensation is between panes then a seal is broken. It’s best to check your warranty but if it’s out of date then we can fix you a new set!
Broken window
Sometimes accidents happen. If the window has shattered then a replacement is necessary and it is probably worth investigating how it happened!
Identifying the cause
Do you think it might have been an attempted break-in? If you do, call the police now. This can also help your insurance.
If it was an accident or due to nature then an insurance claim might be the way to go. Your homeowner’s insurance should be able to advise you if you have good evidence for a claim.
Clean up time
Are there shards of glass around? Better clean those up so that any children or pets don’t get hurt! Always make sure you’re wearing thick gloves so you don’t cut yourself and use a broom for the smaller pieces.
Secure that window
Leaving a broken window can leave your house exposed to nature or burglars. The best thing to do is to cover the window with plastic sheets, wood, or any material you have available. This will keep any rain and cold out of your house for now. Depending where you live, if security is a problem then you should use 2×4 pieces of wood to board up the window.
